Change is never easy and can be stressful. Not everyone knows where to start when it comes to renovating an apartment.

Renovation Planning and Preparation

In any project, it is useful to plan and set clear goals. Decide on the type of renovation: a minor refresh or a complete rebuild. Based on this choice, move on to the following steps. It’s best not to change the order of the renovation process.

Design

Think about the design of your future home: which interior style you prefer, which colors appeal to you, what absolutely must be included in the apartment, and what you can easily do without. Study design magazines, note the details worth considering, collect photos of interiors you like—everything will come in handy.

Work Plan

Take time to make a detailed list of the upcoming tasks. Work point by point: move a wall opening, replace windows, install skirting boards, and so on. With a visual renovation roadmap in front of you, it will be easier to estimate the scope of work and calculate costs. Next to each item, write down the necessary materials to plan deliveries in advance.

Budget

Renovation costs consist of two parts: material costs and labor costs. If you do everything yourself or with the help of friends/family, you can exclude the latter. If you hire professionals, discuss the price of each type of work in advance and request a quotation.

Rough Work

This type of work is also called “dirty work.” Be prepared for a lot of dust and debris. That’s why it’s important to separate the rough finishing from the final finishing phase.

Demolition

Almost every renovation begins with demolition, even cosmetic ones. To apply new wallpaper, you must remove the old one (or several layers). Start by dismantling flooring, partitions, old tiles, and removable doors.

Installation of Walls, Partitions, and Openings

Once demolition is complete and waste is cleared, it’s time to build new walls. The choice of materials for partitions is important. Usually, brick, aerated concrete, or drywall are used. Drywall partitions are installed on a finished concrete screed. If you’ve chosen drywall, postpone the installation until later in the process.

Front Door and Windows

The next step is replacing the front door and old windows. If you buy ready-made standard sizes, installation won’t take long. If doors and windows are custom-made, keep the production time in mind and place the order in advance.

Other Finishing Works

When the “shell” of the apartment is ready, you can install the bathtub, shower cabin, sink, and toilet; attach radiators; and mount the plumbing.

At the same time, electrical work is completed: outlets and switches are installed, lights are mounted, and the indoor air conditioning unit is placed.

Finally, skirting boards are installed and interior doors are hung. To prevent them from damaging the walls, door stoppers are added!
