Interior painting

Interior painting covers walls, ceilings, internal doors, window frames and staircases. Because preparation is lighter and weather isn’t a factor, it costs less than exterior work — on average € 30–€ 35 per m². We work dust-controlled, protect your floors and furniture, and leave the room clean.

Exterior painting

Exterior painting protects your home against rain, sun, frost and wood rot. It needs weather-resistant paint, more preparation and sometimes scaffolding, so the price is higher — on average € 35–€ 40 per m². We work in a system of primer, intermediate coat and topcoat, at a stable temperature (12–20 °C) for the best result.

How often does exterior paintwork need redoing? On average every 5 to 7 years, depending on exposure, colour and the quality of the previous coat. Touching up small damage early prevents wood rot and costly repairs later.

Staircase painting

Painting a staircase is precision work: plenty of sanding, thorough degreasing and a hard-wearing topcoat that stands up to daily use. Because it’s detailed work, we usually charge by the hour rather than per m².

What does it cost to paint a staircase? A staircase is usually priced by the hour (€ 35–€ 55/hr), because of the sanding and detail involved. The total depends on the number of steps, the condition of the wood, and whether old layers need removing. A durable finish normally needs a primer plus two topcoats.

Window frame painting

Painting window frames is both maintenance and protection: well-painted woodwork keeps out moisture and prevents wood rot. Exterior frames need weather-resistant lacquer and careful prep around glazing beads and corners.

What does it cost to paint window frames? Window frames are usually priced per unit or by the hour (€ 35–€ 55/hr) rather than per m², because of the detail. The price depends on how many frames, interior or exterior, and the condition of the wood. Rot or loose glazing beads mean extra repair work — we assess this during the free site visit.

Ceiling painting

A ceiling needs an even, streak-free finish with no roller marks. For large, smooth ceilings, spraying is often faster and cleaner than rolling.

What does it cost to paint a ceiling? Expect roughly € 10–€ 20 per m² for a ceiling with brush and roller; spraying is often cheaper in an empty room. The price depends on the condition of the surface, the number of coats, and whether cracks or stains need covering.

Door painting

We finish interior and exterior doors smooth in the lacquer, without brush marks. Good preparation — sanding, degreasing, priming — determines how crisp the result is.

What does it cost to paint a door? Painting a door costs on average € 60–€ 100 per door, including primer and topcoat. The price depends on the size, the condition of the door and the finish level you want.

Wall painting

Wall painting (emulsion or latex) is the most common interior job. For large, smooth surfaces, roll-on emulsion (€ 10–€ 16 per m²) or spraying (€ 6–€ 12 per m²) is more economical than brushwork.

Spray painting (lacquer & spray work)

Spray painting gives the smoothest, most even finish on large surfaces such as ceilings, walls, doors and cabinets. It needs extra masking and preparation, but on big areas it saves time and often costs less per m² (€ 6–€ 12) than brushwork.

How much does painting cost in 2026?

Cost depends on the surface, the condition of the substrate, the number of coats and the paint quality. 2026 guide prices:

What drives the price: the condition of the woodwork (rot and old layers add prep time), access (exterior scaffolding), the number of coats, and paint quality. We price detail work by the hour and large surfaces per m² — the most transparent way for you.

Tip — VAT: homes older than 2 years qualify for 9% VAT on labour instead of 21%. Booking interior work in the winter months (“winterschilder”) often means more flexibility in the schedule.

How much does a painter cost per hour in 2026?

A painter costs on average € 35 to € 55 per hour in 2026. Interior work is usually € 35–€ 45 per hour, exterior work € 40–€ 55 per hour. This includes small materials and tools, but usually excludes paint and VAT.

How much does painting cost per m²?

Expect € 30–€ 35 per m² for interior work and € 35–€ 40 per m² for exterior work. Large, smooth surfaces can be cheaper with roll-on emulsion (€ 10–€ 16/m²) or spraying (€ 6–€ 12/m²).

Do I pay 9% or 21% VAT on painting?

Homes older than 2 years qualify for 9% VAT on labour. If the home is under 2 years old, it’s 21%. Paint and materials are charged separately at 21%.

Can I hire a painter for interior only, or exterior only?

Yes. You can book interior-only, exterior-only, or a combination. On larger, combined jobs we work more efficiently, which usually lowers the price per item.

Do you work with a fixed price or an hourly rate?

For large surfaces and complete jobs we work with a fixed, itemised price. For small repair or detail work an hourly rate can make more sense. We always agree this clearly in advance.
